Fire Safety Management
NIST fire risk services are a comprehensive assessment and gap analysis of fire prevention, fire protection, and life safety systems in commercial, institutional and industrial buildings. Inspections cover installed sprinklers, pumps, fire detection and alarm systems, fire doors, fire extinguishers and many other building products and systems to assess and identify compliance improvement needs as regards the requirements specified in applicable local or national building, fire and energy installation codes. The assessment has to identify hazards and take steps to prevent fire in order to protect the safety of occupants, visitors and those in the immediate vicinity.
☛ life safety fire risk assessments to meet the requirements of current legislation across India
☛ property protection assessments to reduce and manage the potential for extensive property loss in the event of fire
☛ Extensive fire risk assessments addressing both life safety and property protection, conducted in accordance with the appropriate standards and codes including National Building code (Part 4) - Fire & Life Safety, NFPA (National Fire Protection Association of USA).
☛ Identify the fire hazards - Sources of fuel, oxygen and ignition.
☛ Identify people who might be at risk - People in premises, vulnerable people.
☛ Evaluate identity and implement the fire precautions that are required - Fire prevention,Prevention of spread of smoke and flames, Fire detection and alarm, Fire-fighting equipment, Means of escape, Signs and notices, Lighting.
☛ Record findings, plan and train - Emergency plan, Information and instruction, Training.
☛ Review and revise the assessment as necessary
☛ All employees in a workplace should be provided with basic information about fire safety in general and the fire procedures in particular. This should be done at induction and might be repeated periodically, or as the need arises.
☛ Information of fire procedures should also be provided to contractors and visitors, perhaps through induction training programmes, or by providing written information.
Fire evacuation arrangements need to be tested by carrying out fire drills. NIST training approach on mock drill are as follows:
☛ Survey of the facility/plant by the experts and furnishing guidelines about the requirement such as Escape route planning, Emergency Exits, Identifying Safe Assembly Point, Checking Fire Alarm and Public Addressing System/Siren.
☛ Conducting Co-ordination meeting with ERT (Emergency Response Team) members such as Evacuation, Fire Fighting, First Aid, Salvage, Communication and Rescue Team Members.
☛ Conducting Evacuation/ Mock Drill and giving highly motivational and emotional awareness talk to the assembled people. Showing various simple rescue techniques and First Aid ideas by using volunteers out of the assembled crowd.
☛ Basic Do's and Don'ts about Evacuation.
☛ Familiarizing ERM (Emergency Response Manual) to the Emergency Response Team Members.
☛ Submitting report and certificate as a proof for having conducted the Evacuation Drill.
